How to become Private Investigator in District of Columbia (DC)?

In order to be a private investigator in dc you need to possess a license issued by Metropolitan Police Department. You must be at least 18 years of age and resident of District of Columbia (unless you specifically appoint a resident attorney or agent to maintain your office).


You must be of good moral character. You will have to undergo a thorough FBI background check. Your next step is to fill an application form requesting for a license. You will have to attach two passport size photographs; your fingerprints (contact police department or local sheriff’s office for getting fingerprinted). Also, you will have to attach a surety bond of $5000 along with the application form. The surety bond must be issued in your favor by a state certified insurance company.


After becoming a private investigator (after getting your license), as per gun laws of district, you cannot carry any dangerous or concealed weapon with you. To do so, you will have to fulfill another certain requirements for the same. Contact Police department for this purpose.
