How to become private investigator in Maine?

Maine is a state which requires license to work as a private investigator. If you want to take private investigation as a profession you will have to get the license from the Department of Public Safety. You will have to meet the basic requirement such as you must be 18 years of age and you must be a citizen of United States. You must be of good moral character. You will be investigated for your criminal record. You must not have any criminal record since past 5 years. You must be a graduate from any state accredited university or have completed GED. You must be employed for a minimum of 1700hours as an investigative assistant or must be employed as a member of investigative services of united states for minimum one year or must be employed for minimum one year as a law enforcement officer of the state or you must be possessing a minimum of 6 years of combination of work experience including at least two years in non clerical occupation and educational experience consisting of sixty academic credits of post secondary education or an associate degree in criminal investigation.

Then you will have to fill the application form. You will have to provide all the necessary information in it. You will have to provide your full name, the address of your residence since last five years, your height, weight, color of your eyes. You will have to answer all the questions relating to your criminal background and drug usage. Attach all the necessary documents.

You then have to pass an examination conducted by commissioner to get your license hassle free. This examination deals with subjects pertaining to private investigations. While giving this examination, do be familiar with Maine statutes and rules regarding private investigations.

The total fees for original biennial license is $400, out of which $50 must be submitted with the application and $350 must be submitted upon when you are issued the license. The fee for an investigative assistant’s license is $600, out of which $200 must be submitted with the application and $400 must be submitted when you are issued the license. The fee for a 4-year renewal is $400, which is refundable upon denial of renewal.

Expiration: If a previously issued license has expired and not been renewed within a period of 60 days, the application shall be considered the original application and the same fees and all requirements of an original application shall apply.
