How to become a Private Investigator in Massachusetts?

In order to become a Private Investigator in Massachusetts, you need to possess a license issued by the colonel of Massachusetts State Police. You will have to undergo through a thorough background criminal as well as moral check. You cannot become a private investigator in Massachusetts if you have ever been convicted of a felony, such as murder, assault or financial fraud, within the United States.

You must have at least three years of practical experience in private investigation field. You may be a former member of an investigative service of the United States or a former police officer of a rank or grade higher than that of patrolman, of the commonwealth, any political subdivision thereof or an official police department of another state or a police officer in good standing formerly employed for not less than ten years with the commonwealth or any political subdivision thereof or with an official police department of another state. Your next step is to fill an application form requesting for grant of private investigator license. The application form is available for download here. The application form must be duly filled, signed and notarized. Also, you will have to get three personal references in back of form; duly signed by all three of them. Do not forget to attach your experience certificate. You will also have to attach $5000 surety bond issued in your favor by a state certified insurance company. Do take a writing class because as a private investigator you will have to write reports.

Also, you will have to renew your license when the validity expires; such validity is for one year. One important thing is that the colonel of the state police may annually renew and may at any time for cause, after notice and a hearing, revoke, any such license. An application for a renewal shall be on a form furnished by the colonel.
